P-P Hartnett was born in West London of Irish parents. Until the age of seven he grew up in a resdidential home for the elderly.

His best friend left school at sixteen to start up a ladies underwear stall in Kensington Market and go on the game. "With a friend like Ashley, weekends meant initiation: bondage trousers, hanging around The Colherne and ASA 400."

Hartnett's club and street-style photography has featured in The Sunday Times, The Independent, The Face, ES Magazine and Time Out - amongst others - and exhibited in New York, Tokyo and London. He has also worked alongside children with emotional and behavioural concerns, the homeless and young people involved in prostitutional activities. In 1995, the year of lesbian visibility, Hartnett ran the notorious drag king club, Naive.

P-P Hartnett lives alone. Home is a little house on a hill in Lancashire.

"While the gay literati quibble about uses and misuses in queer writing, P-P Hartnett shows how it's done." Justin Chin, author of Bite Hard
